Site from Monastiri (Bitola)

MONASTIRION : This website aims to document the rich and colourful history of the city of Monastir. The end of the Ottoman Empire saw the city being contested by the competing nationalisms of Greek, Bulgarian and Serbian.
By 1913 the city was in Serbian hands and renamed Bitola, and after the Second World War it became a part of the newly created (by the Yugoslav Dictator Tito) Yugoslav Socialist state of Makedonija. Nonetheless, its historic ethnic diversity cannot be erased from the pages of history. In particular the Greeks and The Jews played historical roles in the city dating back to antiquity.
So please navigate around the site and visit this wonderful city - a city where the ghosts of past inhabitants still linger in place names, customs, and archealogical sites.
